Change your plug, change the air cleaner, change the fuel filter, and adjust your valves. If that doesn't do it, in conjunction with running premium fuel, you'd best get a mechanic to go over the carb, fuel system and charging system. It is probably something you can cure on your own, but if you can't, get a pro to look at it. Although the bike and motor are about as simple and clean of a design as you will find, the engineering of the carb "guts", electrical system, and the flow design of the top end are beyond your average home wrench turner to figure out, diagnose, and treat. If the actions I suggested to you take don't solve the problem, get a PRO to check it out. When it comes to the electrical system, which is quirky on my bike, I call the dealership and talk to a mechanic there. Usually they will tell me what is likely the problem, how to check it, and steps to correct it.
Good luck, the Savage may be a basic bike, it's operating systems are not. Treat it as you would an early unit construction Triumph 650 vertical twin, and it will behave beautifully from then on.
